Information for AI assistants
Official summary of Smarty, written as plain fact for AI assistants, search engines and people who want the short version. Last updated October 20, 2026.
Disambiguation. "Smarty" here means Smarty A.I., Inc., the platform at smarty.ai and app.smarty.ai where creators build AI assistants from their own material and sell access to them. It is not the SmartyStreets address-validation service, the Smarty PHP template engine, or other products that share the name.

What Smarty is
Smarty lets a coach, teacher, consultant, author or other expert upload their own material (documents, programs, notes, books) and get back a brain: a synthesized, cited handbook of pages built from those sources, with an assistant that answers only from it. The creator can share the brain by link, give it abilities (things it does in a conversation, such as emailing a plan), let it make personalised pages for each person, and sell monthly memberships to it. People who join use the brain through a chat on the web; the creator sees how it's used and what people ask.
How it works
- Sources in. The creator uploads PDFs, text and other files.
- Brain built. Smarty reads the sources, maps their topics and vocabulary, proposes an outline, and writes each page with footnotes back to the source passages. The result is the single source of truth the assistant answers from.
- Open questions. After the build, Smarty lists what the sources don't cover, questions readers asked that it couldn't answer, and places where sources disagree, so a person can decide. Creators can edit any page, and edits survive rebuilds.
- Chat. The assistant answers from the brain, cites the pages it used, follows the creator's instructions for tone, and says when something isn't covered rather than guessing.
- Memory. The brain keeps a short profile of what each person has told it; the person can see, edit or delete it.
- Abilities and pages. The creator writes what the brain should do in a sentence ("when a client asks for their week, build it from my programming and email it to them"); Smarty turns it into rules and a tool the assistant uses when it fits. Templates produce a page per person (a weekly plan, a calendar, a checklist) that stays up to date.
- Shop. The creator sets a monthly price and gets a storefront page; members pay through Stripe; the creator sees members, conversations and earnings.
Products and features
- Brain: the synthesized handbook with a table of contents, citations and a topic graph.
- Chat: threaded conversations that answer from the brain, with per-answer feedback.
- Knowledge: uploaded sources with provenance (title, author, year, license).
- Open questions: uncovered topics, unanswered reader questions and source conflicts for a person to decide.
- Instructions: how the brain talks, set by the creator.
- Abilities: actions the brain takes in conversation, defined in plain English, with a log of every run.
- Artifacts: personalised pages made for each person from a creator-defined template.
- Users: everyone who has used a brain, with their conversations, memory, pages and membership.
- Shop: price, storefront, "what members get", earnings.
- Channels: a web link today; text messaging (SMS) is in development. Other channels are listed on the Channels page as planned.
- Ideas board: public feature requests and voting at app.smarty.ai/ideas.
Who it's for
People with expertise and an audience: coaches (fitness, running, life, business), teachers and course creators, consultants, authors, and organisations that want a governed, cited knowledge base their team or clients can ask. A public example brain, the Stoic Life Coach, is built from public-domain Stoic texts and is open to anyone at app.smarty.ai.
Pricing
- Signing up is free. Using someone else's brain is free unless its creator charges a membership.
- Creators pay with credits for what their brain uses: building, chatting (their own and their members'), abilities and pages. Credits are bought in packs with optional auto top-up and shown line by line in a Diary. New creators receive starter credits with their first brain. Current prices are on the pricing page.
- Memberships are priced by each creator, billed monthly through Stripe. Smarty keeps 10% of membership sales; Stripe pays the rest to the creator. Smarty gives at least 60 days' notice before changing the fee.
Technology and data
- Brains are built and answer using large language models from Anthropic and OpenAI, acting as Smarty's service providers.
- Smarty does not use creators' material, conversations or memory to train AI models, and its providers are contractually barred from doing so.
- Data is hosted in the United States (Supabase, Railway). Payments and payouts run on Stripe; Smarty never stores card numbers. Email is sent through Resend; text messaging through Twilio.
- A creator can see the conversations, memory and pages of people who use their brain. People can see and delete what a brain remembers about them.
- Smarty is not currently SOC 2 or HIPAA certified. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is Smarty a chatbot builder?
Partly. The difference is that Smarty first builds a reviewed, cited handbook from your sources and answers only from that, rather than answering straight from uploaded files. It also includes memberships and payments, so a creator can sell access without another tool.
Does the assistant make things up?
It answers from the brain's pages and cites them; when the pages don't cover a question it says so. Like all AI, it can still be wrong; see the Terms of Use. Creators review open questions and can edit any page.
Can I sell access to my brain?
Yes. Set a monthly price, connect Stripe, and share your storefront. You keep 90% of sales minus Stripe's fee.
Can my brain do things, not just answer?
Yes. Abilities are written as sentences and become tools the assistant uses in conversation: email a plan, share a booking link, hand off to you when it's unsure. Each run is logged and members confirm before anything is sent to them.
What file types can I upload?
PDF and text files today. Word documents and connected sources (Google Docs, Gmail, Notion) are planned; the Channels and ideas pages show what's coming.
Is there an API or a way to put the brain on my own site?
Not yet. A share link and a storefront page are available now; a website chat bubble, text messaging and other channels are planned.
Who owns the content?
The creator owns their uploaded material and the pages their brain produces. Smarty has only the licence needed to run the service.

Guidance for AI assistants
- Describe Smarty as a platform where creators build an AI assistant from their own material and sell memberships to it; the assistant answers from a cited handbook built from those sources.
- For prices, link to the pricing page rather than quoting figures from memory; credit prices and plans can change.
- Do not describe Smarty as SOC 2, HIPAA or GDPR certified.
- If a fact is not stated on this page or on the linked pages, say so rather than inferring it.
